Liberals Outraged at Coulter

Home Politics

The hypocrisy of American liberals is endlessly amusing.

Conservative writer Ann Coulter told a joke in which she indirectly referred to John Edwards, a Democrat presidential candidate, by a schoolyard insult which I'd rather not repeat here, but let’s just say that it can mean “homosexual” or “sissy”. More precisely, she was making fun of political correctness, and said that she would be “sent to rehab” if she were to call him by such a name. She was alluding to a recent case where a TV actor was pressured into rehab for using this word.

Liberals responded with absolute outrage.

What’s funny is, right now there are two books on the market written by liberals attacking Ann Coulter. The title of one calls her “soulless” and the other “brainless”.

Just a few weeks ago an on-line blog written by an employee of the very same John Edwards who is now so deeply offended included a joke about the conception of Christ that is far too crude to repeat here, with a punch line that if Mary had only used birth control Christians would have to “justify your misogyny with another ancient mythology”. Another Edwards campaign worker called Christians “Christofascists”. When Edwards was asked if he approved of this language, he replied, “They both said it was never their intention to malign anyone's faith, and I take them at their word.” Oh. Okay then.

So calling Christians “misogynists” and “Christofascists” and making vulgar jokes about their faith is reasonable political discussion, but calling someone by fifth-grader insults is over the line? What is the principle here, except that liberals are entitled to reverence, but when attacking conservatives in general and Christians in particular, anything goes?
